This is to protect the privacy of consumers and to make it more difficult for spammers to send unsolicited SMS messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To register with a DLT platform, your business must provide certain information, including business name, address, contact information, and the purpose of your SMS campaigns. Once registered, your business will be given a unique identifier to use when sending SMS messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers can also use DLT registration to opt out of receiving SMS messages from businesses. To do this, they can text &#8220;STOP&#8221; to the SMS message they receive from the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DLT registration is a simple and effective way to protect consumers&#8217; privacy and reduce spam SMS in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What led to the implementation of these laws in India?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DLT Registration Requirements: Documents and Eligibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you begin the DLT registration process, make sure you have the following documents ready:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Business PAN Card<\/strong> &#8211; Required for entity verification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GST Certificate<\/strong> &#8211; Proof of GST registration <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Company Registration Certificate<\/strong> &#8211; Or any valid address\/identity proof <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authorised Signatory Letter<\/strong> &#8211; A formal letter from a competent authority authorising the representative to register on the DLT platform <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sender IDs<\/strong> &#8211; Planned SMS headers for your campaigns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SMS Templates<\/strong> &#8211; The message content you intend to send<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Needs DLT Registration?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any individual, business, government agency, or organisation (called a &#8220;Principal Entity&#8221;) that sends bulk SMS to customers in India is required to register on TRAI&#8217;s DLT platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of DLT Registration in India: TRAI Timeline (2018\u20132024)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a report from TRAI, in India, there are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.2 billion total mobile subscribers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>230 million subscribers registered in DND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 billion total messages sent in a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22,000 registered telemarketers (before DLT)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10+ lakhs SMS senders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10+ lakhs SMS headers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.2 million SMS disconnections due to illegal telemarketing activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now this will interest you. 85-90% of the total SMS senders in India are spammers\/fraudsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This high percentage of spammers led to a lot of problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increase in fraudulent activities: <\/strong>Illegal activities have increased over the years. This caused trouble for businesses that use SMS to communicate with their customers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inability to track SMS senders: <\/strong>Communication regulators in India couldn\u2019t trace SMS senders and third-party vendors. They didn\u2019t have enough information to do that.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulty in penalising scammers: <\/strong>It took over seven days to arrest a fraud or a scammer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of regulations exposed customers to privacy infringement, fraud, and data loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why TRAI introduced DLT to solve this problem and properly regulate the use of SMS in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color: #f9f9f9; border: 1px solid #e0e0e0; \n     padding: 16px 20px; margin: 20px 0; border-radius: 6px;\">\n  <h3 style=\"margin-top: 0;\">Is DLT Registration Mandatory in India?<\/h3>\n  <p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">\n    <strong>Yes.<\/strong> TRAI made DLT registration mandatory for all \n    businesses sending commercial SMS in India starting \n    <strong>January 2022<\/strong>. Any business that sends bulk SMS \n    without completing DLT registration will have its messages \n    automatically blocked by telecom operators during the scrubbing process.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DLT implementation brought regulation and fair play to the use of SMS.
