What is a DLT template?

DLT templates are SMS templates or formats you register with a DLT provider before sending them.

They are not the actual messages that your customer sees on their phone screens. But a skeleton or structure of the message.

This picture will make the meaning of SMS templates clearer.

5 expert tips for a fast and successful DLT template registration

Over the years of resolving customer DLT complaints, I discovered that these are the five things to do to avoid the DLT template registration headache.

  • Choose the right DLT template category
  • Use your brand name when creating SMS content
  • Ensure your message has a clear intent
  • Use variables with caution
  • Work with a reliable SMS provider

Let’s look at each in detail.

1. Choose the right DLT template category

Most people get rejected because they choose the wrong template category.

Here is what you must know before you choose a template category during your registration:

  • Understand your kind of business
  • Figure out what you want to use SMS for

These will help you choose the most appropriate template category.

For example, if you run a healthcare business and want to send appointment reminders to your patients, the template category will be different from if you run a bank and want to send OTP messages to your customers.

DLT provides four types of template categories:

  • Transactional SMS template,
  • Service-implicit SMS template,
  • Service-explicit SMS template,
  • Promotional SMS template

Let’s look at each.

Transactional SMS template

The Transaction category is only for the Indian banking industry. The industry uses it to approve all their OTPs and transactional content within India.

You will be rejected if you are not a banking institution in India and select this template category to register OTP messages.

Service-implicit SMS template

The service-implicit template is for all industries to send OTPs and transactional SMS in India except the banking industry.

This means if your business is not in the banking sector and you want to register templates to send OTP and transactional SMS, this is the template you select during your registration.

So, for example, you can use the “Service Implicit” template if you are a wholesale business interested in sending OTPs and order completion SMS to your retail partners.

What qualifies as a service implicit message?

The following messages qualify as service implicit messages.

  • E-commerce purchase confirmation
  • Confirmation messages from apps
  • Messages from medical facilities, including pharmacies and hospitals
  • OTP for login
  • TSP/ISP messages
  • Balance info
  • Updates, notifications, and upgrades
  • Retail bill/warranty messages
  • Government/DOT/TRAI-mandated messages.

Here is an example of a service implicit message template:

“Thank you for ordering from Breena Cosmetics. Your order ID is [#var#]. Your order will get delivered in 3-4 working days. Visit breenacosm.com for more info.”

Service-explicit SMS template

This template is for sending promotional SMS with an alphabetic sender ID to your existing customers or internal employees.

You can also use it to send updates, offers, and discounts to registered customers. But it works only with an alphabetic sender ID.

For these kinds of messages, you must get consent via consent SMS from your recipient.

Let’s use Breena Cosmetics as an example again.

If they want to send their existing customers offers and discounts, they will register their SMS template as service explicit.

And their SMS header can be “BREENA,” “BRECOS,” or any other variation that resembles their business name.

The template will read like this:

“Your Rs.1000.00 voucher will expire soon! Redeem it now! Use the code [#var#] valid till 30th Apr 2023!”

Promotional SMS template

Lastly, the promotional SMS template

DLT promotional SMS templates require a numeric sender ID.

You can pick any 5 digits for your promotional sender ID. TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) sets a default first digit based on the industry you belong to.

What is the TRAI-designated first digit for each industry?

Here are the TRAI-designated first digits for each industry:

  • Banking/insurance/financial products/credit cards: 1XXXXX, for example, 190456
  • Real estate: 2XXXXX, for example, 240027
  • Education: 3XXXXX, for example, 310529
  • Health: 4XXXXX, for example, 460218
  • Consumer goods and automobiles: 5XXXXX, for example, 530128
  • Communication/Broadcasting / Entertainment/IT: 6XXXXX, for example, 620548
  • Tourism and leisure: 7XXXXX, for example, 710239
  • Food and beverages: 8XXXXX, for example, 814239

Promotional templates are flexible and allow you to advertise your business or a particular commodity.

As this template is promotional, it requires consent.

Let’s see how Breena Cosmetics can send out promotional SMS. The industry for cosmetics is consumer goods, so 5 is the first digit.

Let’s select “592679” as the promotional sender ID. You can choose any 5 digits for your brand.

Here is what the template will look like.

“[#var#], Impress with our best. Try this month’s bestsellers: https://breenacos.com.”

2. Use your brand name when creating SMS content

When was the last time you saw a branded SMS without a brand name?

Never!

There is a reason for it. SMSes with no brand names are blacklisted without any intimation from TRAI.

Avoid falling into this trap.

Simply add your brand name at the end of the SMS, as shown below.

Wrong ❌

Dear Customer, your OTP for login is 3075.

Correct ✅

Dear Customer, your OTP for login is 3075 – SMSCountry.

Ensure you adjust for the character limit when doing so.

3. Use clear message intent

You can use as many variables as you want in your message but make sure you add sufficient text to convey your meaning.

For example, the following message,

“Dear Customer, {#var#}{#var#} – SMSCountry”,

Has no meaning and will not help your customer even if it was filled with the right variables.

If you submit templates like this to DLT, they’ll be rejected.

Instead, create a template with sufficient words between the variable to make the template’s purpose obvious.

This will help you ensure your template is approved quicker.

Learn how in the next tip.

4. Use variables with caution

TRAI discourages too many variables at the beginning and end of messages. This can lead to template blacklisting without intimation.

Consider the following message template,

“Dear Customer, Your accounts {#var#}{#var#}{#var#}{#var#} is credited with {#var#}{#var#}{#var#}{#var#}. – SMSCountry”

Although sharing multiple account information in a single SMS may seem ideal, such templates are not optimal.

They are confusing to the receiver and can lead to misinterpretation too.

Consider sending multiple messages with individual account info instead.

Use the following,

“Dear Customer, Your account {#var#} is credited with {#var#}. – SMSCountry”

This looks way cleaner- doesn’t it?

5. Work with a reliable SMS provider

Your SMS template will get rejected if it has even the smallest spelling errors. Make sure to proofread and eliminate all such mistakes.

If you don’t have time, working with an SMS service provider in India with a reliable and responsive customer service team is the next best thing. They will help you formulate your SMS templates without errors.

Your service provider will also help you with sender ID technicalities and selecting the right SMS category.
